Healthy Heat Styling Technique
Many women whether relaxed or natural still use heat during the styling process in one way or another. Whether it is the blow dryer, hooded dryer, flat iron, curling iron or even the crimping iron, heat styling just seems to give the hair that sleek smooth finish which may not be possible otherwise. However there are consequences for the hair if heat is used too often.
For natural ladies the issue of heat damage can occur whereby the hair does not revert to its natural curl pattern when wet. For relaxed ladies the heat can cause severe dryness and promote hair breakage. However, enjoying the benefits of heat styling does not have to be a drag if done properly by preparing the hair for the heat application.
When applying heat to the hair whether direct or indirect heat, always ensure that a heat protectant is used. Indirect heat includes the use of a hooded dryer while direct heat refers to the use of blow dryers, curling irons and so on because these appliances come in direct contact with the hair.
The heat generated by all these appliances should be known and monitored. For naturals more heat is usually required to dry or straighten the hair so that flat ironing and curling at 360 degrees to 390 degrees Fahrenheit is reasonable but should not be done frequently because this high temperature can cause the hair shaft to permanently take on its straight shape and will not revert to its natural curl pattern. This process is known as heat damage. For relaxed ladies 300 degrees Fahrenheit is sufficient because the hair is not tightly coiled and only a smooth finish is desired. The health of the hair must always be the top priority.
